One Year Post-Lasik

Everyone,
I had Lasik surgery a year ago, on March 31, 2000. Before surgery, my
prescription was 3.00, my pupil size, 7 mm. Now, one eye is 20/20, the
other is 20/15 (it was 20/10 on first day after my surgery, which they
said was unusual). Sometimes I see haloes around streetlights, and just
as often, everything is very clear & I don't see haloes at all. (My
daughter & husband don't need glasses, and they both see haloes). I
remember a hockey game I went to a week post-lasik -- the stadium lights &
streetlights after were sparkling clear -- and I used to see haloes
before.
I remember having trouble reading newspapers etc. in the first couple of
weeks after surgery, and I was afraid that I would need readers (I'm 45).
However, that's gradually improved, and I can read just fine now (except
for the very fine print on lables etc. -- I do need readers for that).
That's something I considered before surgery, and I decided that it was
better to wear readers than to have to wear glasses all the time, except
when reading!
I was very sensitive to light at first, and I found that I needed to wear
sunglasses last summer. Also, for the first couple of months I needed to
use eye drops 3 or 4 times a day. I thought I'd never be free of eye
drops! However, it's improved gradually, and although I keep a bottle near
my bedside, I rarely need them.
People have asked me if I have reduced night vision, and I don't notice
any. I work in TV, and often in rooms with low-light, and I manage just
fine.
There were some glitches: a few days post-Lasik I saw flashes in the
corner of one eye, and lots of floaters. It seems that the 'jelly' in one
eye shifted when they used the 'suction', and there was a possibility of a
detached retina. However, that passed uneventfully. Also, when the time
came for my 3-month checkup, I was very concerned, because one eye was
noticeably better than the other; I was afraid that I would need
enhancement in the other eye. (I used to cover one eye, then the other,
checking out which was better!). Turns out that the good eye was a strong
20/15, and the other was 20/20. So, although I could see a difference, it
wasn't a bad one.
I started wearing glasses when I was 2 years old -- that's 42 years of
glasses. It seems like a miracle to me now that I can actually see the
clock etc. at night in bed! So, although I know that people here have had
problems with Lasik, I think it's possible to have a good outcome. I
did! and thank you for letting me share my Lasik Anniversary with you.
Cheers, Alexis
Hi Alexis!

My prescription is almost the same as yours and I have the same pupil size. I am considering lasik but I am worried about worsening my night vision. I already have some trouble with halos at night and night time driving.

How are your eyes a decade post-lasik?

Has your vision remained relatively stable?

How about your night vision? Do you still experience halos, glare, and/or starbursts?

I'm not Alexis, and this group is pretty much dead. But, I had lasik
around then end of 2004. I was -4.5/-4.75, and I've had no real problems.
Right around dusk, I've got just the slightest bit of feeling like I'm not
seeing my best, though it is hard to quantify. Other than that, I see
clearly, day or night. I've got good night vision. I have had a slight
bit of regression in my right eye, to about 20/40 after about 2 years, and
stable since then. Not really worth it to try and correct as I don't
notice it unless I'm comparing eyes.

I am having a bit of presbyopia as I've recently turned 45, but that is to
be expected.

Overall, I'd say getting lasik was one of the best decisions I've ever
made.

Todd,

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Do you remember which type of LASIK surgery you received? My doctor is recommending blade-free custom intralase.

Do you know your dialated pupil size?

I had it done with the mechanical microkeratome. The all-laser system is
better as I understand it, but it was about $1000 an eye extra when I had
it done, so I didn't opt for it.

Here is what I dug up from the group when I had my eyes examined for the
surgery:

]bring, so I don't necessarily understand all of these)
